BAND STRUCTURE OF PHOSPHOR

1. We can think of crystalline solids as having three energy levels.

LEVELS
2. Valence band - the lowest energy level that are occupied by electrons and completely filled.
3. Conduction band - higher energy level than the valence band that are usually vacant.
4. Forbidden zone - level between the valance and the conduction bands that cannot be occupied by an electron.

ELECTRON TRAPS
5. Within the phosphor, there may be impurities that have energy levels different from those of the phosphor itself - introduces discrete energy shells within the forbidden shell that are unoccupied. Known as electron traps.
