EFFECTS OF FILTRATION

1. Filters attenuate low energy photons proportionally more than high energy ones. Does not affect the maximum photon energy.
2. Hardens the beam (increases penetrating power and HVL).
3. Lowers beam intensity - reduces the total number of photons.
4. Reduces skin dose without affecting image quality.
5. Shifts the X-ray spectrum to the right by increasing minimum photon energy.
6. Increases effective photon energy.
