CAUSE OF BIOLOGICAL DAMAGE

1. Caused by ionisation.

2. The body is 70% water and so most damage relates to the ionisation of H2O: leads to the formation of free radicals and hydrogen peroxide which damage other molecules such as DNA.

3. The energy released during ionisation is also capable of breaking molecular bonds.

4. Biological damage could cause: premature cell death (via cell membrane damage), prevention of cell division, genetic mutation that can be passed on to daughter cells (point mutations vs. double-strand breaks) and eventual neoplastic transformation.

5. Damage may occur immediately or over a period.
