SCINTILLATOR-SODIUM IODIDE

Physics

SCINTILLATOR-SODIUM IODIDE

1. NaI is the most common crystal used in nuclear medicine (Thallium used as “activator”).
2. Desirable properties for scintillators: High Z, high light output, highly transparent, cheap
3. NaI has the highest light output (13% of gamma energy gets emitted as light).
4. NaI has low mechanical stability: shatters if > 5°/hour.
5. NaI is hygroscopic (absorbs moisture).
