SCINTILLATOR-CRYSTALS

1. Scintillator crystals have energy “bands”
2. Electrons in lower band can be raised to the higher band.
3. This occurs by Photoelectric effect and Compton scatter.
4. Relaxation of the electrons back down produces visible light.
5. Efficiency can be enhanced using an “activator”
6. Activator atoms provide extra energy levels between bands.
