REYLEIGH/ELASTIC SCATTER

Physics

REYLEIGH/ELASTIC SCATTER

1. Occurs when the incoming photon has an energy of less than the binding energy.

2. In Rayleigh scattering, the incident photon interacts with and excites the whole atom, as opposed to individual electrons as in Compton scattering or the photoelectric effect.

3. This interaction occurs mainly with very low energy x-rays, such as those used in mammography (15 to 30 keV).
