PHOTON-MATTER INTERACTIONS

1. Three things can happen to a photon as it travels through matter: transmission, absorption, scatter.

2. The X-ray image is formed by the transmitted photons.

3. Those that are absorbed or scattered are said to have been attenuated. Attenuation occurs through 4 types of photon interactions (Reyleigh scatter, photoelectric absorption, Compton scatter, pair production).
