BINDING ENERGY (E)

Physics

BINDING ENERGY (E)

1. This is the energy expended to completely remove an electron from an atom.
2. Depends on the element and the shell the electron is in.
3. Increases: as the atomic number (Z) increases, the closer the electron is to the nucleus (i.e. highest for the K-shell).
4. Expressed in electron volts (eV).
