MRI 6A-LONGITUDINAL RELAXATION (T1)

1. T1 relaxation - the exponential process by which atomic nuclei come to thermal equilibrium in a magnetic field (the original pre-polarizing field B 0 ).
2. T1 is the time taken for the longitudinal magnetisation to recover to 63% of its maximum value.
3. Called longitudinal as the protons come to rest along the magnetic field.
4. AKA spin-latttice relaxation (as the protons are transferring energy to the surrounding lattice).
