HEMOSTASIS-THROMBUS DISSOLUTION

Rheumatology

HEMOSTASIS-THROMBUS DISSOLUTION

1. Thrombus dissolution, or fibrinolysis, is initiated by tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) and released from the endothelial cells.

2. tPA converts plasminogen to plasmin, which then breaks down fibrin and fibrinogen and limits the size of the thrombus.

3. Proteins C and S are natural anticoagulants; they inactivate Factors Va and VIlla.

4. Protein C also blocks the inhibitor of tPA (plasminogen activator inhibitor-I).
