PULMONARY EMBOLISM-PATHOLOGY

1. PE results in an increased resistance to blood flow => increased pulmonary artery pressure => increased right ventricular work.

2. The pulmonary circulatory system is highly compliant and therefore inherently has high capacitance.

3. Because of this capability, up to 50% of the lung vasculature can be blocked before increased workload on the right ventricle becomes significant in a normal individual.

4. Massive PE occurs when > 2/3 of the functioning lung is involved.
