AUTONOMIC DYSREFLEXIA - MECHANISM

1. Stimulus ascending through the spinothalamic + posterior column incites a sympathetic response from the preganglionic sympathetic neurons of the intermediolateral cell column.
2. Results in regional vasoconstriction + increase in CO + reflex bradycardia (when the brainstem vasomotor centres attempt to reduce BP).
3. Bradycardia is ineffective as BP is affected more by vasoconstriction than decrease in flow rate (Poiseuille's law).
4. Descending inhibitory tracts are unable to block this due to the SCI.
