BOTULINUM TOXIN

1. Blocks NM transmission by inhibiting the release of ACh into the synapse.
2. Onset of action - 4-10 days.
3. Length of effect - 3-6 months.
4. Optimal injection is guided by nerve stimulator or by seeking the motor end-plate using an EMG.
5. Precise injection into the motor end-plate has been shown to optimize the resulting paralysis.
6. Precise injection leads to maximal muscle paralysis per unit of toxin used.
