STROKE-ENDARTERECTOMY

1. Despite 3% perioperative stroke/death rate, CEA for asymptomatic carotid stenosis reduces the risk of ipsilateral stroke by 30% over 3 years.

2. Refer for carotid endarterectomy if the patient has > 70% occlusion and an expected lifespan of > 5 years and the anticipated operative morbidity and mortality is < 6%.
