NCS-NEEDLE EMG POTENTIALS (1)

1. Motor unit action potential (MUAP): potential recorded when an individual voluntarily contracts & activates a motor unit.

2. Insertional activity: brief electrical discharge from muscle when moving a needle electrode through it.

3. Prolonged/increased activity can be seen in early denervation, some myopathies & inherited syndromes.

4. Reduced insertional activity is seen in muscle fibrosis, necrosis and if it is not muscle.

5. Fibrillation potentials: short duration (1-5ms) spikes with initial downward deflection seen in abnormal muscle fiber activity in LMN lesions.
