ACID-BASE DISORDERS

1. Primary respiratory disorders: The change in PaCO 2 causes the initial change in pH; and the kidney slowly responds in an opposite direction by dumping or holding on to HCO 3 - .

2. Primary metabolic disorders: The change in HCO 3 - causes the initial change in pH; and the respiratory rate and tidal volume immediately increases or decreases.
