Infectious Diseases

PNEUMOCCAL MENINGITIS

1. S. pneumoniae is also the most common cause of bacterial meningitis in adults.

2. Empiric treatment for community-acquired meningitis should include a 3rd generation cephalosporin (generally ceftriaxone) and vancomycin in case there is any beta-lactam resistance.

3. Focused treatment for susceptible pneumococcal isolates should be with high doses of ceftriaxone or cefotaxime.

4. Cephalosporin-resistant isolates should be treated with vancomycm.
