MALARIA-P. FALCIPARUM

Infectious Diseases

MALARIA-P. FALCIPARUM

1. P falciparum causes the most severe malaria; it is the cause of virtually all fatal infections.

2. It also has wide spread chloroquine resistance. Most cases are acquired in central Africa.

3. Differentiating this species from the others is critical because of its capacity to be resistant to chloroquine, its ability to infect RBCs of all ages (thus causing overwhelming parasitemia with end-organ damage), and the need to hospitalize infected patients and document a decline in parasitemia with therapy.
