HEMOSTASIS-INTRODUCTION

Coagulation after a vascular injury consists of 2 stages:

1. Primary hemostasis - consists of platelet plug formation, vascular spasm, and capillary endothelial adhesion. Lasts 12-24 hours. Platelet plug formation = platelet attachment => platelet activation => platelet aggregation.

2. Secondary hemostasis - refers to the coagulation cascade.
