PRIMARY SCLEROSING CHOLANGITIS-MANAGEMENT

1. The only sure treatment for PSC is liver transplantation.

2. Colectomy cures ulcerative colitis, but does not alter the course of PSC.

3. High-dose ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA, 20-25 mg/kg) was recommended in the past, but a 2010 guideline from the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases now recommends against UDCA because of lack of efficacy and increased risk of adverse effects!
