COLON

1. Normal colonic transit - 12 to 30 hours from iliocecal valve to rectum.
2. Haustrations = circular muscular contractions that cause mixing of contents. Generally do not cause forward movement of stool.
3. Mass movements = muscular contractions that propel stool forward within the colon. Last 10-30min and occur a few times/day.
