OSTEOPOROSIS-SCREENING

1. The National Osteoporosis Foundation Guidelines of 2010 recommend screening all women age 65 or older and all men 70 or older with DXA scans and selectively screening women and men > 50 years if they have any OP risk factors.

SCREEN THE FOLLOWING:
2. GI diseases (UC, Crohn's, celiac, gastric bypass, malabsorption)

3. Endocrine disorders (hyperparathyroidism, Cushing syndrome, hypogonadism, hyperthyroidism)

4. Medications (glucocorticoids, thyroxine overreplacement, lithium, phenobarbital, phenytoin, cyclosporine)

5. RA, SLE, anorexia

6. Prolonged bed rest or WC-bound

7. Multiple vertebral compression fractures noted on x-ray (2/3 of vertebral fractures are painless)
