THYROID STORM

1. Storms are precipitated in inadequately treated hyperthyroidism by surgery, infections, iodine load (amiodarone, contrast dye).
2. Fever, psychosis/delirium, tachycardia, hypertension, CCF.
3. Death from adrenal insufficiency (adrenals may be normal but work overtime) + cardiovascular collapse.
4. Decreased TSH + raised free T4.
