RIBS & STERNUM-JOINTS

1. Ribs are used for breathing!

2. Costovertebral joints (combination of two joints) - articulation of the rib heads (costovertebral joints) + tubercles (costotransverse joints).


3. Costochondral joints - anteriorly, the ribs join the costal cartilages (1-7 sternocostal joints, 6-9 interchondral joints, 11-12 free ribs).

4. Manubriosternal joint - symphysis b/w manubrium + body of sternum.

5. Xiphisternal joint - symphysis b/w xiphoid process + body of sternum.
