MUSCLES-INNER LAYER OF THORAX

1. TRANSVERSUS THORACIS (anterior) - arises from the lower end of the sternum. Digitations fan out to be inserted into 2nd-6th costal cartilages bilaterally. Depresses ribs.

2. INNERMOST INTERCOSTALS (lateral) - lie on the lateral thoracic wall, extending from the lower border of ribs above to the upper border of ribs below. Elevates ribs.

3. SUBCOSTAL MUSCLES (posterior) - internal surface of lower ribs near their angles to superior borders of 2-3 ribs below. Depresses ribs.

4. All supplied by intercostal nerves.
