1. Definition - space b/w the pleural cavities, occupying the thoracic cavity.

2. It contains the heart, great vessels, oesophagus, thoracic duct, vagus + phrenic nerves, trachea + bronchi.

3. Divided by the transthoracic plane of Ludwig - a plane passing through the angle of Louis (manubriosternal junction) anteriorly, and the inferior endplate of T4 posteriorly.
