AZYGOUS SYSTEM OF VEINS

ORIGIN
1. The thoracic and upper lumbar regions are drained by posterior intercostal + lumbar veins into azygous (right) veins + hemiazygous veins (left) .
2. Represents the persistent right posterior cardinal vein of the embryo. Commences by the union of the ascending lumbar vein + subcostal vein on the right.

COURSE
3. Ascends via the aortic opening (T12) on the right => by the side of the vertebral bodies behind the oesophagus => over right bronchus (at transthoracic plane) => anterior to oesophagus => into SVC.

TRIBUTARIES
4. Lower 8 posterior intercostal veins.
5. Superior intercostal vein.
6. Right bronchial veins.
7. Veins from middle 1/3 of oesophagus.
8. 2 hemiazygous veins at T8, T9.
