Anatomy-Thorax

ARCH OF AORTA

ORIGIN & COURSE
1. The arch emerges from the ascending aorta => passes up to midpoint of manubrium => over left bronchus => to T4 vertebtal body.

CONTENTS
2. Arch adventitia contains barorecptors => innervated by vagus => pass to nucleus tractus solitarius => regulates HR.
3. In the region of ligamentum arteriosum are the aortic bodies => innervated by vagus => regulate respiratory reflexes by detecting hypoxia.

RELATIONS
4. The arch is crossed on the left by the vagus (passes posterior to lung root) + phrenic (passes anterior to lung root).
5. Left recurrent laryngeal nerve hooks around the ligamentum arteriosum, to pass upwards in the tracheo-oesophageal groove.
6. On its left - pulmonary trunk.
