SPINAL DURA MATER/THECA (ends at S2)

ORIGIN & EXTENT
1. Prolongation of the inner layer of dura mater of the posterior cranial fossa.
2. Extends from the foramen magnum to S2.

WITHIN SPINE
3. It is firmly attached to the tectorial membrane and PLL over the body of the axis (C2).
4. It is separated from the spinal canal by epidural fat and the epidural venous plexus (internal vertebral venous plexus).
5. It is pierced segmentally by spinal nerve roots, prolonged over these roots to form lateral projections → hence stabilizing the cord within the spinal canal.
