Anatomy-Neuroanatomy

1A) CN I (OLFACTORY)-ORIGIN

1. First order neurons (olfactory cells) are scattered bipolar cells in the neuroepithelium.

2. Their central processes gather themselves into 20 nerve filaments and pass through the cribriform plate in the ethmoid bone and pierce dura mater and arachnoid of the anterior cranial fossa.

3. These synapse on the mitral cells (second order neurons) whose central processes pass in the olfactory tract to the anterior perforated substance and uncus.

4. These second order neurons directly activate consciousness, bypassing the thalamus.
