11C) CN XI (ACCESSORY)-COURSE

1. CN XI lies dorsal to the vagus in the jugular foramen, behind the jugular tubercle.
2. Outside the skull, the cranial fibers pass to the vagus - motor to pharynx, larynx, oesophagus & soft palate.
3. Neck - lies on the IJV over the lateral mass of C1 and passes into the SCM (which it supplies).
4. Posterior triangle - lies over the levator scapulae, behind the scalene muscles).
5. Then passes under the trapezius (which it supplies).
