ARTERY-INTERNAL CAROTID, RELATIONS

TIP: mnemonic - SLAP HOLIS

MEDIAL
1. Superior laryngeal branch of the vagus crosses medially from behind to divide into its internal + external laryngeal branches.
2. Ascending pharyngeal nerve lies medial to it.

LATERAL/SUPERFICIAL
3. Hypoglossal n. (CN XII) + Occipital artery also cross it superficially at its origin.
4. Lingual + facial veins cross it superficially at its origin.
5. IJV lies lateral with the vagus placed deeply in the middle.
6. Superior root of the ansa cervicalis (branch of CN XII) runs down along it.

HIGHER LEVEL
7. At a higher level it is overlapped by the SCM + posterior belly of the digastric + stylohyoid.
8. Posterior auricular artery also overlaps it at a higher level.

WITHIN PAROTID
9. At the parotid, separated from the ECA by the 'pharyngeal structures' = glossopharyngeal nerve, pharyngeal branch of vagus, stylopharyngeus.
