SUBMANDIBULAR GLAND

1. Mixed mucous + serous in man.
2. Consists of a large superficial part + small deep part which are continuous across the free posterior margin of the MYELOHYOID.
3. Submandibular LN lie not only in contact with the surface of the gland but also within its substance.
4. The marginal mandibular branch of CN VII may lie over the gland.

SUPPLY
5. Blood supply - facial artery.
6. Drained via the submandibular LN.
7. Preganglionic parasympathetic secretomotor fibers arise from the superior salivary nucleus in the pons. Fibers are transmitted via the nervus intermedius => chorda tympani => lingual nerve.
8. Sympathitic vasoconstrictor fibers arise from the plexus around the facial artery.
