OESOPHAGUS

1. Commences in continuity with the cricopharyngeus muscle at the level of the lower border of the cricoid cartilage (C6 vertebra).
2. The cervical part of the oesophagus lies anterior to C6, C7 vertebra, covering prevertebral fascia and posterior to the trachea.
3. The recurrent laryngeal nerves are on each side in the tracheo-oesophageal grooves.
