NOSE & PARANASAL SINUSES

1. Nose - for breathing, warms + cleans inspired air. Olfactory receptors are in the nose. Consists of the external nose + nasal cavity.

2. Nasal cavity - divided into 2 halves by the nasal septum. Each half has olfactory, vestibular, respiratory parts (depending on the epithelial covering).

3. Hard palate - in the floor of the nose.

4. Soft palate - flap-valve which shuts off the mouth cavity from the airway through the oropharynx.

5. Oropharynx - crossroads of the airway + food-way; collissions b/w airstream and food are avoided by the control mechanisms of the soft palate.
