NASAL CAVITY-REGIONS & FUNCTION

REGIONS
1. The nasal cavity extends from the nostrils to the posterior end of the nasal septum. Posteriorly it opens into the nasopharynx.
2. Respiratory area - most of the cavity is respiratory area (covered by respiratory epithelium).
3. Vestibular area - just inside the nostril lined by skin with hair follicles + glands.
4. Olfactory area - roof + upper parts of nasal septum + lateral wall over the superior concha.

FUNCTION
5. The surface area of the lateral wall is increased by the nasal conchae. Mucus secretion traps particulate matter and the beating cilia push it back to the nasopharynx.
