CAROTID SHEATH-UPPER PART CONTENTS

1. CN IX + CN XI emerge b/w IJV and ICA at the base of the skull and immediately curve away superficial to the vessels.
2. CN XII emerges medial to sheath, curls around the inferior vagal ganglion, passes b/w the IJV + ICA. Throughout its course, it has arteries deep + veins superficial to it.

BETWEEN THE ICA + ECA
3. Styloid process + stylohyoid ligament.
4. Stylopharyngeus, styloglossus.
5. CN IX, its branch to stylopharyngeus, its pharyngeal branch.
6. Pharyngeal branch of vagus (CN X).

SUPERFICIAL TO ICA + ECA
7. Stylohyoid, posterior belly of digastric.
8. CN XII.

DEEP TO ICA + ECA
9. Superior laryngeal nerve + 2 branches (internal, external laryngeals).
