PERIOSTEUM & ENDOSTEUM

Anatomy-General

PERIOSTEUM & ENDOSTEUM

1. Periosteum is a thick layer of fibrous tissue covering bone and provides nutrition via blood vessels.

2. Its deeper part, osteogenic layer forms new bone.

3. The periosteum is united to the underlying bone by Sharpey's fibers, particularly strong over attachment of tendons and ligaments.

4. Endosetum is a single layer that lines inner bone surfaces (marrow and vascular canals) and is also osteogenic.

5. Subcutaneous periosteum is supplied by nerves from the overlying skin.
