NERVE SUPPLY-POSTERIOR RAMI

1. The posterior rami supply the extensor muscles of the vertebral column & skin overlying the back.

2. The cutaneous distribution of the posterior rami extends almost to the posterior axillary lines.

3. Each posterior ramus divides into a medial & lateral branch.

4. Both branches supply muscles but only one (medial/lateral) supplies skin.

5. Following posterior rami supply skin: C2-5, T1-12, S1-5.

6. In the upper half of the body the medial branches & lower half of the body the lateral branches supply skin.

7. No posterior rami supply muscles or skin of the limbs.
