MELANOCYTES

Anatomy-General

MELANOCYTES

1. Melanocytes which are mainly found in the basal layer of the epidermis, manufacture melanin granules which are ingested by other epidermal cells.

2. Dopa is converted by the enzyme tyrosine kinase into melanin.

3. In dark skins the melanocytes are more active and thus produce more pigment.

4. UV light stimulates melanocyte activity and may also induce cancerous change, especially in the fair skins that become sunburnt.
