ORIGIN & COURSE
1. Formed by the union of the superior mesenteric v. + splenic v. behind the neck of the pancreas.
2. Runs up in the free edge of the lesser omentum.
3. Enters the porta hepatis, divides into left & right halves and enters the respective halves of the liver.

TRIBUTARIES
4. Receives blood from the inferior mesenteric, b/l gastric, and cystic veins, periumbilical v.

RELATIONS
5. Forms anterior boundary of epiploic foramen.
6. Lies behind bile duct & hepatic a.
