BILIARY TRACT-COMMON BILE DUCT & VARIATIONS

1. CBD is 8cm long, 8mm in diameter.

2. Upper third lies in free edge of lesser omentum. Lies anterior to portal v. + right of hepatic a.
3. Middle third - runs behind the first part of the duodenum & slopes away from the portal v. IVC lies behind the duct.

4. Lower third - slopes to the right b/w the groove of the head of pancreas & 2nd part of duodenum.It joins the pancreatic duct at the ampula of Vater.

5. The ampula & ducts are surrounded by muscle ( sphincter of Oddi). The ampula opens into the 2nd part of the duodenum, at the major duodenal papilla.

VARIATIONS
6. Sphincter of Oddi may be absent.
