INFERIOR VENA CAVA

ORIGIN
1. Opposite L5 vertebra by the confluence of b/l common iliac v. behind right common iliac a.

COURSE
2. Runs up on the right of the aorta.
3. Lies on the right crus of diaphragm, behind bare area of liver.
4. Passes through the diaphragm at T8.
5. Short intra-thoracic course before draining into right atrium.

RELATIONS (from below up)
6. Lies on the bodies of lumbar vertebrae, right of abdominal aorta.
7. Overlaps sympathetic trunk.
8. Runs anterior to right renal artery.
9. Infracolic compartment - IVC is retroperitoneal, crossed by 3rd part of duodenum + root of mesentery.
10. Supracolic compartment - lies behind the portal vein, pancreas, bile duct, posterior wall of epiploic foramen.
11. Separated from right crus by right suprarenal gland, right inferior phrenic a., right coeliac ganglion.
12. Behind bare area of liver.
