HINDGUT BLOOD SUPPLY-INFERIOR MESENTERIC ARTERY (IMA)

ORIGIN
1. From the anterior part of abdominal aorta at L3.

COURSE
2. Runs down, crosses the pelvic brim over the SI joint.
3. Then converges on the ureter at the attachment of the sigmoid mesocolon.
4. Its branches cross to the left in front of the ureter.
5. Continues along the sigmoid mesocolon as the superior rectal artery.

RELATIONS
6. Inferior to - 3rd part of duodenum at its origin.
7. Anterior to – aorta, left common iliac a., sympathetic trunk, psoas, left hypogastric nerve.
