Anatomy-Abdomen

GIT HISTOLOGY

1. Lined by epithelium derived from the endoderm; liver + pancreas also have endodermal origins.
2. Muscular wall, from upper oesophagus to lower rectum is in 2 layers - inner circular + outer longitudinal.
3. This arrangement is characterictic of all tubes which empty by orderly peristalsis, in reality are arranged in 2 spiral layers.
4. The 2 layers of the upper 1/3 of the oesophagus consist of striated muscle.
5. From the lower 2/3 this is replaced by visceral muscle, which constitutes the 2 layers of the remaining GIT.
6. Mucous membrane has 3 components - epithelium, lamina propria (underlying connective tissue), muscularis mucosa (thin visceral muscle layer).
