FOREGUT VENOUS DRAINAGE

Anatomy-Abdomen

FOREGUT VENOUS DRAINAGE

1. Superior mesenteric vein unites with the splenic vein behind the neck of the pancreas to form the portal vein.
2. Lower 1/3 of the oesophagus is drained by the oesophageal veins which drain into the left gastric vein. Portal obstruction can lead to blood bypassing the portal system through these veins, which form varices under the mucosa which can bleed.
3. Left gastric vein joins the portal vein.
4. Right gastric vein runs along the lesser curvature and drains into the portal vein.
5. Short gastric + left gastroepiploic veins empty into the splenic vein.
