Anatomy-Abdomen

ENTERIC NERVOUS SYSTEM

1. All parts of the gut (and derivatives) are innervated by parasympathetic and sympathetic nerves, which travel along the gut arteries.

2. Gut receives postganglionic sympathetic (inhibitory) + preganglionic parasympathetic (excitatory) fibers, but is able to function autonomously.

3. Parasympathetic fibers to the hindgut derived from coeliac plexus + inferior hypogastric/pelvic plexus.

TWO PLEXUSES
4. From the middle 1/3 of oesophagus to rectum there are 2 plexuses.

5. Myenteric plexus - b/w 2 muscle layers.

6. Submucous plexus - in the submucosa.
